Q. What trend will drive CAD/CAM Industry in near future? Optimal integration between CAD and CAM as well as a highly reliable Design/Model for Manufacture methodology is what will drive the CAD/CAM industry in the future. It is evident that what is being designed will one day be manufactured; however – inspite of new age technology like 3D printing, there are various aspects regarding volumes, material, resource availability that a manufacturer (usually small & medium businesses) need to consider. Often, there is a disconnect between both these processes which results in inefficient manufacturing. CAD/CAM tools have the ability to tie…

The pioneering solar aircraft has completed the first flight of its kind across the Atlantic, proving that the latest generation of sustainable technologies can enable a new era of environmentally friendly transport systems and solutions. Earlier today, Solar Impulse, a groundbreaking solar aircraft, completed a 71-hour transatlantic flight from New York to Seville in the course of its remarkable round-the-world journey, which began last year in Abu Dhabi. The airplane relies on the newest generation of solar cells, batteries and lightweight composites to accomplish the once seemingly impossible task of flying around the globe without consuming any fossil fuels. The…
This solid ceramic endmill might feel like plastic in your hand, but its cutting performance in nickel-based alloys is often twenty times that of carbide tools. Most shops evaluate new cutting tools in an effort to reduce machining time, increase tool life, or improve part quality, and sometimes all three. Stellar Precision Components Ltd., a Tier II aerospace supplier in Jeanette, Pennsylvania, did it for an entirely different reason. “We’d just taken an order for some Inconel parts,” says production manager Edward Frieze. “None of us were really worried at that point about tool life or making a profit on…
Hypertherm, a manufacturer of plasma, laser, and waterjet cutting systems, is pleased to announce the winning of five unique court cases against five Russian companies during the last few months. All five companies were found guilty of violating Hypertherm’s trademark rights by importing a variety of counterfeit consumables and Powermax air plasma systems. As a result of the judgement against them, the defendants are prohibited from importing any products in Russia with the Hypertherm name, and are also required to reimburse Hypertherm for damages and court fees. Critical business challenges for any original equipment manufacturer (OEM) include quality control, efficiency…

According to a report, analysts forecast the global machine tool market to grow at a rate of 6.33% over the period 2013-2018. A machine tool is a machine for shaping or machining metal or other rigid materials, usually by cutting, boring, grinding, shearing, or other forms of deformation. Machine tools employ some sort of tool that does the cutting or shaping. All machine tools have some means of constraining the work piece and provide a guided movement of the parts of the machine. Thus the relative movement between the work piece and the cutting tool (which is called the tool…
With the new Vgrind 160 grinding machine for solid carbide tools, Vollmer entered the worldwide market in the area of tool grinding in March 2014. From a technological point of view, the Swabian grinding and erosion machine specialist is literally expanding into a new dimension: Thanks to the two vertical spindles, multi-level machining can be carried out for the first time using the Vgrind 160. This enables tool manufacturers to produce large numbers of solid carbide milling cutters and drills quickly and precisely. With the Vgrind 160, we are establishing ourselves in the international tool grinding market for the first…
